I NOTICED with sadness the article about the intention to bulldoze the Carlton Tavern in Acomb Road in order to build a new care home (The Press, March 20).

For those not familiar with the building it is a fine Edwardian villa with stone mullion windows, black and white gables, tile hanging and a soaring conservatory.

When I first read about the plans I thought how nice for the care home residents to have such a fine conservatory to enjoy the sunshine in, but no - knock it all down.

These sorts of buildings are becoming ever more scarce in York.

Its neighbour, Shelley House, another fine villa, was also bulldozed a few years ago and a dreadfully boring block of flats now sits on the site.

I suspect that an equally unadventurous building will be the outcome for the Tavern site.

A great shame as this building is one of the highlights of this stretch of Holgate.

Set back from the road behind lawns and trees, it presents an elegant contrast to its more mundane neighbours.

It’s probably not a listed building, although it ought to be, and no doubt nobody at the council will miss it, but I’m sure a lot of local people will be sad to see it go.
