I AM in complete agreement with the letter from Susan Whitwell (“York footpaths need to be kept in order”, Letters, March 11).
The avenue of trees in Parliament Street, York, are magnificent when in full leaf, but unfortunately no amount of pollarding (tree lopping) to the London plane trees will reduce the uneven and hazardous state of the York stone paving caused by the roots.
Left to their own devices, the trees would be expected to grow to 35 metres high and with a huge root ball.
Resistant to pollution and well adapted to urban conditions they might be, but I think it’s time that City of York Council removed the trees.
By levelling the street they will remove trip hazards caused by these trees.
