ALLAN CHARLESWORTH’S letter (“Speed vans are not the answer”, March 1) serves to highlight the issue of excessive speed some drivers deem acceptable.

Not only does excessive speed contribute to accidents but also the severity of accidents.

There is another issue with speeding motorist, that of excessive noise far above the level which could be expected if they drove at the speed indicated for the road they are travelling on.

Excessive road noise is a well known health hazard often referred to as noise pollution.

On the A63 through the village of Cliffe we have a 40mph limit, though you would not think that was the case.

After 11 years of complaining to the police and Police and Crime Commissioner, nothing has been done to alleviate the issue.

Yes we get visits from the safety camera vans (that name is surely a misnomer). I found it interesting, while disappointing, that the police database only records one visit in January and none in February.

The only answer for areas with persistent complaints of speeding is the installation of fixed speed cameras.

Ms Mulligan appears to be rejoicing when she proclaims more mobile safety vans are to be procured.

Why, I do not understand when regular complaints about excessive speed (and the resultant noise pollution) see only one van deployed in Cliffe for 1.5 hours in January.

Driver awareness courses for those caught speeding are in my opinion ridiculous. Higher fines should be applied then drivers may think twice before speeding if their wallets are hit hard.
