AFTER watching the Lords debate amendments to the EU withdrawal notification bill, I believe we should praise the contribution of the Archbishop of York.

Unlike the York Central MP, he has shown that he accepts the result of the referendum despite voting remain, and gave clear and reasoned arguments for getting the unamended bill passed without delay.

I also urge those suggesting the Lords be abolished to think again before destroying a valuable part of our Parliament.

Being unelected has its merits, such as their being free to say what they truly believe, and many do possess considerable wisdom and experience without being from the same mould of career politician.

Reforming the Lords should continue but the way to deal with unelected people in positions of power is not to scrap them but to criticise them, loudly and without restriction when they make unpopular decisions, including Supreme Court judges.

They are entitled to make judgements without interference, not to tell us we have to accept it in silence.

The PM has to conduct the Brexit negotiations and we can fire her if she fails.

If the Lords put restrictions on her then failure would not be entirely her fault.
