THE Stoke-on-Trent by-election result was not really a ground breaking surprise, but totally illogical after returning Labour’s Gareth Snell, who scraped in with a 2,620 majority.

He was a local councillor but as Labour had held the seat since 1950 one could pin a red rosette to nearly anything and the disillusioned among the Stoke electorate would vote for it.

It makes one wonder where the 70 per cent of the electorate were who voted for Brexit.

It was a low turnout so was it the remoaners who braved Storm Doris and voted for a candidate who supports staying in the EU.

The result rings slightly of the last York Central elections after Hugh Bayley bailed out and Rachael Maskell was parachuted in from Norwich.

York has been Labour for most of my lifetime for some reason, so once again stick a red rosette onto a cardboard cut-out and the disillusioned will vote for it.

Jeremy Corbyn may be delighted he at least kept one of the seats on offer.

He is a wonderful man in my eyes, for as long as he remains Labour leader, the Labour Party will never see power.
