GREAT idea just the wrong place, we said last month of the plans for Spark:York, a temporary street food and social enterprise centre on Piccadilly made out of old shipping containers.

Part of the reason we said that was the original artist’s impressions. They showed brightly-coloured containers stacked like Lego bricks - a sight we thought would be out of place in the middle of York.

The latest architect’s drawings are much better. They show what looks almost like a long, timber-clad building. This is still a hugely important site. But we’re glad those behind Spark:York have taken steps to improve the look of their proposed centre.
