IN the words of a song by Mike And The Mechanics: “Every generation blames the one before.”

I can’t say that I agree with those sentiments because if it had not been for the courage and resolve of previous generations, we would surely not be living in a free country.

They fought and died in two world wars for that freedom.

Some of that generation are still here, albeit now old. These people and their fellow pensioners are the people that David Farnsworth (Letters, February 16) seems to be blaming for everything wrong today.

Does he really believe the rubbish written that pensioners are better off than those in work?

Of course, some may be, but it is because they have been prudent in the past.

He says pensioners are still working. Well, if they are, it is only because the pension age keeps advancing and they have no other option but to keep on working long after they should be retired.

His suggestion that pensioners are absorbing most of the NHS resources is both unnecessary and insulting. No-one can avoid getting old, it is a fact of life.

I am heartily sick of people continually blaming the older generation for everything, including Brexit.
