HOWARD PERRY appears to be unaware of the issues surrounding the development of brownfield sites for housing (Letters, February 16).

He complains that development of the British Sugar site will be delayed, blaming the council.

What he obviously did not understand from the article is that this unfortunate delay has nothing whatever to do with the council or the planning process.

It is solely a result of the Environment Agency instructing the landowners to eradicate contamination and gases in the soil of this former industrial site, which involves a process which could take a minimum of two years.

The Conservative-led administration is committed to building more housing in York and in doing so to prioritise the development of brownfield areas over land in the green belt.

The Conservative Party stood on this platform in the 2015 local elections and is now delivering on this policy at council level.

It must be understood that brownfield sites require varying degrees of rehabilitation depending on their previous uses and it is unrealistic to expect that they can be developed as quickly as other property.
