I HAVE a sneaking feeling that David Farnsworth’s letter (“Young taxpayers should get political”, February 16) was a tongue in cheek assessment of older people’s alleged wealth.

After all, does anyone really believe you pay into the club all your life to then leave it for no benefit?

For all the handouts pensioners receive and the consequential drain on society Mr Farnsworth detailed, what about the benefits younger people have obtained?

Twitter, X Factor, mother and father paid maternity leave, free nursery places, the minimum wage, internet dating and, of course, the bank of mum and dad.

Don’t look at us wrinklies with envy. You wouldn’t want to be bombarded with funeral plans and have to feel delighted when told we can get more out than we put in when we pass and get a free pen just for dying.

So young people out there, save for what you need and wait patiently for what you want.

If you are to get political to take us oldies on, don’t underestimate our political acumen, after all we were responsible for Brexit you know.
