AS a slightly older member of Maurice Vassie’s generation, I might be expected to share his views on the state of the world (Letters, February 3).

I fear, however, that where he wears rose tinted spectacles, I see through a glass darkly.

Despite the collapse of the League of Nations, a great deal was expected of the United Nations in the bright new post-war world.

Unfortunately, the Cold War between the US and USSR stymied that.

The Russians vetoed every resolution on principle and the US did so if it hinted at criticism of Israel.

I have no comments on the EU other than to say that I waited 40 years for Brexit.

As for Donald Trump, I suspect he will get on well with the Queen.

After all, both have issues with the SNP government and both had Highland mothers.
