THERE is much hand-wringing by local politicians (The Press, January 16) over couples in York earning the average wage being unable to afford to buy a home here, yet these politicians offer no proposals to help them.
There needs to be a reality check here.
With the ever-increasing deposits needed, the only way is for couples to save more.
What were seen as luxuries not too long ago are now viewed as essentials, with some people not prepared to forego part of their current lifestyle for even a short period in order to get that important first foot on the housing ladder.
Mutual saving, and the pleasure at seeing the bank balance growing, could even strengthen a couple’s bond.
