I JUST wanted to write in praise of Dave Flett’s piece (The Press, January 14) about the eternally delayed stadium complex.

For too long any discussion of this subject has been dominated by a vocal minority of naysayers, nearly all of whom have personal grudges, political motivations, or vested interests to serve.

In most cities throughout the UK developments like this happen quickly and easily, with everybody understanding the council have broader responsibilities than just ensuring the bins are collected.

Only in York would it be controversial to suggest the council should involve itself in providing first rate facilities.

The mismanagement and political machinations have been a depressing saga for a decade or more now.

Commitment must be clear and unambiguous; construction starts in spring regardless of all other considerations.

Even a failure at the upcoming judicial review doesn’t need to derail this, as the original permission can be reverted to.

York is, in many ways, a wonderful city. I was born here and am delighted to be back living here. But I long for a little vision, real leadership that can drive forward grander projects.

There is no excuse for further delay, and the electorate must keep the pressure on to ensure no councillors attempt to delay or derail this.

I hope Mr Flett’s piece represents The Press taking a much stronger role in this.
