TODAY, we urge readers of The Press who are concerned about safety on our roads to play a part in helping shape tougher sentences for dangerous and careless drivers.

We launched our The Road to Justice campaign last year to draw attention to the unreasonably lenient sentences being handed out to drivers who killed or maimed others as a result of their poor driving.

We called for more serious sentences to reflect the serious nature of the injuries caused by reckless drivers.

The campaign was welcomed by victims and victims’ families, and was backed by both York’s MPs, as well as senior police officers and councillors.

We were delighted, therefore, when in December last year the Government announced that it would be re-writing the sentencing guidelines.

Which is where you come in.

The Government has launched a consultation on its proposals, which include increasing the maximum penalties for causing death by dangerous driving and for causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink.

This is an issue that could potentially affect all road users - in other words, just about everyone. So it really is important that you have your say.

In The Press today we carry details about how you can do that.

All you need to do is visit the website the Government has set up for the purpose, then input your comments.

Please do so. You have until February 1. And this is a real chance to make your voice count on an issue that matters to us all.
