I AM pleased that the priority gritting routes cut by Labour in 2013 look set to be reinstated (The Press, December 21).

When they were in opposition, the Liberal Democrats opposed the cuts and urged Labour to think again.

I am pleased that, now the Lib Dems are part of the joint executive running York, this rethink will finally happen.

In total, around 26 miles of road around York are planned to be put back, with the £36,500 needed, coming from the council’s contingency account.

Where I live, in Haxby and Wigginton, this includes some of the main roads in the area like Eastfield Avenue, Greenshaw Drive, Oaken Grove, Usher Lane, and Wheatfield Lane.

I’m glad to see that the council is once again focusing on core frontline services like gritting and salt bins in local communities.

I understand that due to national funding cuts, the council is faced with some tricky budget problems.

However, investing to ensure residents can travel safely around the city – whatever the weather - has to be a key priority.
