THE report headlined “New zero hours work blow” (The Press, December 30) is yet another example of the drip by drip proof that when our unelected Prime Minister stood on the steps of Downing Street and said that she and her party wanted a fair society for the whole of the country, she was not actually telling the whole truth.

The Press reported that the Resolution Foundation had found that “workers on zero hours contracts earn £1,000 a year less than other employees doing the same job”.

That amounts to nearly £20 a week. Not a large amount to some people, but to those just about managing (the JAMs) it makes a difference between swimming or drowning.

Why doesn’t the Government make zero hours contracts illegal, or at least allow an opt in, opt out of such contracts.

Sadly under today’s Department for Work and Pensions rules, people who are claiming Job Seekers Allowance are not allowed the choice.

It they are offered a job on a zero hour contract and if they turn it down their benefit is stopped.

Can any Tory MP (or any MP from any political persuasion) explain to me how people that are forced into zero hour contracts can make this country a place that is a fair society?
