FOR shopaholics, it’s perfect timing.

York’s long-awaited city centre Primark store officially opens in Coppergate today in time for the Christmas rush. Expect a crush - but also some great seasonal bargains.

The value fashion retailer opened a store out at Monks Cross a few months ago, so the opening of the Coppergate shop could potentially be a real boost for other city centre retailers. It is bound to be a big draw, and yet another reason for shoppers to come into town.

Monks Cross is hardly sitting on its laurels, however. Planners are expected next week to approve plans for a multi-million pound overhaul of the out-of-town shopping centre. The £15 million project will include a new standalone store, food kiosks, and a facelift for all the other 90s-style shopfronts.

The owners of the shopping centre believe the improvements will help it compete with Vangarde and Clifton Moor, not to mention the city centre.

Competition is clearly fierce in the retail sector.

This makes things tough for retailers themselves. But it is hopefully good news for shoppers.

And it is good news for York itself. The city has to continue to raise its game if we are to compete with Leeds. The new Primark and the Monks Cross plans are evidence that we are doing so.

“These two initiatives... will boost even further the retail offer of York, and attract more shoppers and visitors the city and the wider area,” said Mike Cartwright of the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Trade.

Exactly. Happy Christmas shopping, everyone.
