I’M grateful to Ken Thorpe (Letters, November 30) for his suggestion that I may eventually need to buy an electric bike, for my old age.

I have recently swapped the dropped handlebars on my Dawes tourer for straight ones, and can pedal it easily up the steep side of my street, in bottom gear.

In respect of his alleged low numbers who use the A1237’s existing segregated crossings for cyclists and pedestrians, we can all see what we would like to see.

I hope that Ken does not allow his attention on the road to be too distracted, as he strives to spot underpass users.

The purpose-built cycle track alongside part of the A1237 connects 15,000 people living in that area of York.

It is especially useful for many pupils of Joseph Rowntree School, and has doubtless contributed towards a reduction in so called “school run” journeys along the bypass.

When North Yorkshire County Council built the A1237, they created massive severance for many non-motorised journeys.

Ever since City of York Council inherited the road, they have sought modest external grants to redress that situation.
