I MUST agree with Stuart Wilson re Clifford’s Tower (Letters, November 23).

I have to admit that I am not too averse to a visitor centre at Clifford’s Tower, but only if it was built tastefully to the tower and surrounding areas.

About three years ago when Penny Bricks was in Wetherby Road, I called in and there was tons of reclaimed stone in the yard.

If the centre was built with reclaimed materials which blend in with the tower and the steps leading up to the tower then it may be beneficial.

The last thing I want to see is a visitor centre built with mock stone like the shops in Spurriergate and Bridge Street.

Castles themselves have evolved over the centuries, going from places of destruction and deaths to places now being visited by tourists.

Pontefract Castle was a large and interesting castle but after the Civil War it reminded the citizens of the town of the horrors of the war and they petitioned Parliament to have it demolished.

Now there is very little to see. If only those generations had had the foresight to leave these magnificent buildings for future generations.

At least let the people of York unite and demand that if a visitor centre is built it is done with materials (which are out there) that enhance the area so that future generations can appreciate the tower and its surrounding area.
