WHILE I can see some merit in Paul Hepworth’s letter (The Press, November 28) that useful underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists should be included in the proposed upgrades of existing roundabouts that do not have this facility already on the A1237.

If a survey was to be carried out at the A59 and A19 roundabouts, I am sure that given the scant usage of this facility, the inclusion would not justify the cost of installation.

Being a regular user of the A1237 as a motorist I have rarely seen a cyclist using the purpose-built track and bridge (almost to motorway standards) between Clifton Moor and Haxby.

Being a former cyclist for many years can I remind Mr Hepworth that his cycling days may not last for ever.

If it is any consolation his journeys on two wheels could be extended by the use of an electrically-propelled bike.

However, noting his home address, the final leg of the journey may prove to be a challenge for the battery of a trusty steed.

Keep pedalling.
