JUST what is the value of our historic city and its traditions to our councillors?

We have a situation whereby the fabric of the second most photographed building is to be violated in the name of a visitor centre.

The much-valued Guildhall is to have a hole made in those listed walls for the sole purpose of making a cup of coffee easier to achieve for conference delegates by saving a 20-yard walk.

The once listed Mansion House garages are to be removed to enable a couple of tables and chairs to be placed outside a café.

The Mansion House is becoming a museum instead of the Lord Mayor’s home where they could welcome guests and show them around.

And now we have shipping containers being stacked up in Piccadilly, and low and behold among its uses are an eatery and bar.

The sad fact of all this is that councillors from all three political parties are supporting these proposals.

Rapidly our city and its traditions are being eroded in what cannot be described as progress because it’s moving away from what our visitors come to see and what we are proud of.

There is one bright light on the horizon and that is all those millions being used to upgrade the roundabouts.

If they are all done like the new Poppleton one, adventurous motorists could come for the York Bypass Experience, which will rival any theme park ride in the country.
