HOWARD PERRY unfairly castigated Cllr Ian Gillies (Letters, October 21) for likely agreeing to an upcoming recommendation by City of York Council transport officers to delay a planned major spend on Scarborough Bridge.

The proposed scheme will widen the existing walkway, and ramp it at both ends. It will then be easily accessible for cyclists, and wheelchair plus mobility scooter users.

The Lendal Bridge corridor will become avoidable for many short, local journeys.

There will likely be a further increase in cycle commuting to York station, plus to and from the future York Central site.

The project has received joint funding by Leeds City Region and City of York Council, and discussions are currently under way with Network Rail.

Many schemes of this nature experience slippage for a variety of reasons, and the recommendation to Cllr Gillies is the outcome in this particular instance.

I’m sure that Ian is supportive of the scheme, and will share the disappointment of local cycle campaigners, at the delays. But it will eventually be built far more quickly than the stadium.
