DEAN Vivienne Faull may or may not be interested to know that numerous times over 25 years I’ve made the ten minute walk to the Minster on Tuesday practice night to hear some of the world’s best bell ringing.

Every Christmas morning I’m one of a packed congregation listening to the bells announce Christmas to our city and at the chime of ten the service and Christmas begins.

On New Year’s Eve I’ve beeen either at the Minster or like thousands of others been at home listening to the bell ring in the New Year.

On Remembrance Day I’ve been one of many as the bells chime in the two minute silence.

As I signed the petition at number 7,921, it is obvious that the bad-timing decision to remove all this isn’t going down well.

A quick trawl around general press articles is illuminating. The Guardian quotes Sharon Atkinson, director of communications at York Minster, who declines to comment, “for us it’s a matter of confidentiality”.

But then she lapses into copious corporate speak about “processes”, “governance”, “health and safety” and the ubiquitous “diversity”.

If Sharon Atkinson can’t explain what is going on, perhaps it is time for Archbishop Sentamu to sort things out a bit.
