WHATEVER the issues facing the Dean and Chapter, their sudden decision to sack the entire band of bell ringers, and so silence the bells for months, will have a profound impact on the thousands of York citizens who were lucky enough to live within the joyful and uplifting sound of the bells, and on the millions of visitors to York for whom the sound of the Minster bells was iconic.
We will be reminded of this loss every single Sunday morning and every single Tuesday evening.
Was there really no way to deal with the issues that could have avoided silencing the bells?
