BEING a member of the Friends of York Minster I, with many others I’m sure, am lost for words at the appalling sackings of the bell ringers at York Minster.
It is just so inconceivable that in this day and age this has happened to volunteers and that it is the Dean and Chapter of York Minster makes it all the worse to my mind.
For goodness sake, why?
When you have people giving their time freely in being volunteers why would you want to change that by now employing a paid Head of Tower to supervise the ringers when you enjoy it for free as you do now?
York Minster is one of the treasures of the world with its bells and stained glass and is undeserving of all the wrong kind of publicity it is now receiving due to the events of the last few days.
I make a plea to please resolve this folly by writing this letter in supporting the ringing master in his plea to the Dean and Chapter to try to resolve this as soon as possible so York can soon I hope hear the wonderful sound of those bells ring out again.
