MUCH discussion has taken place regarding the flooding of the River Ouse; all seem to agree that dredging will not do.
The condition of the river banks, though, should surely be addressed, keeping them clear of willow and rubbish. Is not the thinking behind this as simple as keeping your drains clear? You let them get furred up and the flow is impeded.
From these two photos taken of the River Ouse at Naburn locks, in 1964 and 2016, it can be seen that willows line the banks where once they were kept clear and well maintained.
As well as restricting and slowing the water flow in the river generally, the reduced speed of the water under the willow growth causes silt to be deposited in this area. Over a period of time there is a narrowing of the river, not huge but measurable.
Is this the same story up and down the river, that the banks are receiving scant attention? Is there indeed a riverbank maintenance policy in place?
