IT was good to read the article and see the old photos (Yesterday Once More, The Press, August 23), but it makes you realise how much of ancient York was lost in the 1930s, as this was only a small part.
Not only why was the Dean’s house pulled down but all the other buildings? The prison was a tourist attraction.
So why did the council of the day allow it and why has it happened since in a supposed ancient city?
As people have said of the proposals now for Clifford’s Tower, just leave it alone.
Look what the council allowed to be built in the 60s, all those monstrosities, especially in Goodramgate.
