CLLR Tina Funnell has a curiously selective memory when it comes to the subject of Local Government Association Peer Reviews of the council (Letters, July 19).

The review to which she refers in her letter was the last of three and showed a marked improvement over the previous two reviews, the first of which was triggered in part by the breakdown of relationships between certain members of the then Labour cabinet and officers and made worse by an overall poisonous atmosphere within the council, which led, in part, to Labour’s inability to maintain a creditable administration.

The second review was a follow-up to the first and the third took place just after the new Conservative-led coalition took office.

One of the aspects of the new current administration that the review specifically praised was its “maturity” (report’s words) in being able to form a coalition in the first place, one has to assume, reading between the lines, in light of the strife and acrimony which had preceded it.

The current administration has spent its first 14 months repairing the tattered relationships between councillors and officers that was left behind by Labour.

It will take time to rebuild mutual trust and good working relationships.

Perhaps Cllr Funnell should reflect on why it has taken the time that it has to rebuild and re-boot council procedures after four years of divisive Labour rule.
