BENEATH the shallow bonhomie, Boris Johnson is a politician of the Tory hard right.

This group does not believe in subsidising shaky businesses, so many of the EU-protected small farmers, who are stewards of our countryside, will go to the wall in Brexit.

In a double hit, sanctions against Russia will be maintained, further hurting agriculture unnecessarily, given that the UK was instrumental in promoting instability in the Ukraine.

Johnson will ratify the TTIP document on trade with the US, ceding UK sovereign powers to huge corporations.

He also has stated that “no stone in Britain will be left unfracked”, which makes him the enemy of all political classes of citizen in Yorkshire. With safety regulations removed, the fracking firms will destroy much that is good unchecked.

Spending on the NHS? Just an empty string of meaningless words, according to Ukip.

Speaking as an oldie who voted Remain, I judge the referendum result to be a disaster for financial services, science, the environment, and Yorkshire.
