FOR all the vitriol flying about over recent weeks, for all the increasingly bizarre claims and counter-claims, many people will probably have woken up today still undecided about how to vote on Europe.

Responsibility for that lies firmly at the doors of those who have taken the lead in campaigning.

Reliable, unbiased information about the relative benefits of remaining part of the European Union or going it alone has been hard to come by. Instead, from both sides, we’ve had scaremongering, deliberate distortion of statistics, grandstanding and the hurling of petty personal insults.

This referendum debate has shown British politics at its very worst. Those who have led both campaigns should be thoroughly ashamed.

We would urge all our readers, however, not to let the appalling quality of the debate put you off voting today.

Our children and grandchildren will have to live for many years with the consequences of what we decide. So don’t let it be a decision taken only by a small minority - by the extremists, or those whose mind was made up long ago.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a real difference to the future of this country, in a simple in/ out vote. It should be a choice made by all the people of this great country, not just a few of them.

So even if you’re still uncertain, even if you’re thoroughly fed up with the whole business, cast your vote today. If necessary, if none of the ‘arguments’ have convinced you, just go with your gut.

Should we be in Europe, or out? It’s in your hands.
