WE hear a lot from the remains about “What would happen to trade when we leave the EU?”

If it goes to the worst case scenario the facts are that they need us to trade with them far more than we need them.

For example, we do not need to buy cars from France or Germany; we can import them from Sweden, Japan, South Korea and other places or, indeed, make them ourselves as we did for many decades before joining the EU.

I’m sure Volvo, Seat, Honda etc will be pleased to fill the gap left when the Germans and French decide to impose their trade war and ban exports to the UK.

Meanwhile, as thousands of the workers at Mercedes, Volkswagen, Renault are losing their jobs so will French and German leaders be losing their votes.

The same reasoning applies to the wine and cheesemakers. I’m sure the Australian, New Zealand and other wine and cheesemakers around the globe will be happy to fill the void left when the French and Germans bite the hand which feeds them.

As for our producers worrying about selling to Europe, Europe is not the EU and new markets will open up all over the globe.

Leaving the restrictive and expensive EU will offer opportunities for world trade which are impossible at present.

Looked at in these terms the scaremongering becomes obvious. The chances of a trade war are about as likely as David Cameron’s threats of World War Three.
