LOCAL democracy died in North Yorkshire on Monday, May 23, with the decision by county councillors to allow the practice of fracking to proceed.

As far as I am aware not one of the councillors who voted in favour of this practice actually lives in Kirby Misperton, near Malton, the proposed site of this very controversial application and industry.

Despite over 20,000 signatures on a petition (The Press, May 24) against fracking and at least 4,000 individual objections to fracking, the county council decided to approve the application.

Central Government have made it clear for a number of years that they intend to decide on fracking (planning) issues if the local authorities decide to turn applications down.

Local democracy is dead.
