REMARKED by Samuel Adams, one of America’s founding fathers and one of the instigators of the Boston Tea Party. To claim no desire to be free of Britain because America would be financially worse off. Now where have I heard similar arguments to that before?
“If you love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, then go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”
Not totally comparable with today of course - as it is not just our “chains”. Our “wealth” in the EU is eroding away too.
