I WOULD like to correct a few of the “facts” printed on your letters page (The Press, May 3).

Maurice Vassie claimed: “As to EU bureaucrats, the number and the cost is about the same as for Birmingham City Council.”

In fact, Birmingham City Council employs around 12,500 people in total, including care workers, bin men, teachers etc. The EU directly employs around 23,500 people.

Philip Roe claimed that Ken Livingstone was suspended from the Labour Party for “comments about Adolf Hitler being a champion of the Jews”. What Livingstone actually said was: “Let’s remember when Hitler won his election in 1932 his policy then was that Jews should be moved to Israel. He was supporting Zionism. This is before he went mad and ended up killing six million Jews.”

Philip Roe claimed that Naz Shah MP was suspended from the Labour Party “for the solution to the Jewish problem part of her manifesto”.

She was in fact suspended for posting a facetious comment on Facebook suggesting that relocating Israel to the United States would solve the Israel/Palestine problem, which she has since apologised for unreservedly.

One can easily criticise Ken Livingstone and Naz Shah without resorting to misrepresenting them.
