WHAT are we to make of the Brexit position on immigration?

The Vote Leave campaign wants a significant reduction while in contrast many Brexit supporters want a complete end to immigration. And then if you look at the Vote Leave website, it hosts supporter groups with yet other ideas.

For example, Bangladeshis For Britain anticipates that a reduction in immigration from the EU will allow increased immigration from Bangladesh and other Commonwealth countries.

It says: “Many of us have friends and family in Bangladesh who struggle to move to the UK, despite their world class skills and education.

“To put it simply, Commonwealth and all non EU immigrants are discriminated against in favour of EU immigrants. We do not believe this is in line with the cultural and historical friendship that Commonwealth nations share.

“Aussies and Kiwis also complain they can’t come into UK – so UK must leave EU.”

I understand that campaigners for Brexit are supporting this view in areas such as Bradford.

Some may welcome this more generous attitude to British communities with families separated across the globe; others may ask whether it is fair to make such promises when no-one is in a position to say how post-EU negotiations might affect immigration policy.
