I TOOK the opportunity which was advertised in The Press to visit the delightful hidden garden located between St Wilfrid’s Church in Duncombe Place and the associated Presbytery in High Petergate.
Signage directed us to enter via the Presbytery, the Grade II-listed Petergate House.
The garden was a tranquil haven, overlooked by the backs of surrounding properties, themselves an eclectic mix of architectural styles.
Those areas of Petergate House which were accessible, including the dining room with refreshments available, were equally intriguing.
Grateful to the Church and Diocese for this almost unique opportunity. Perhaps they might consider opening again on a future Residents First weekend, and briefly allow more local citizens to share their delightful sanctum.
Nearby the Minster was thronged with visitors, and I queued to see the partly restored East Window from the inside.
A fitting tribute to the dedication of the Dean and Chapter, plus the stonemasons and glaziers who have devoted so much time and skill. I look forward to its completion, and the reinstatement of the Lady Chapel beneath it.
