I REFER to the letter from Geoff Robb (The Press, February 1) and wish to to correct his assertion.

City of York Council does not have the power to decrease or increase the number of councillors, this power rests solely with the Local Government Boundary Commission.

The Commission has twice in the last 16 years reviewed and altered the ward boundaries, the last time being in 2012/13 which took effect in the 2015 council elections.

During the review the Conservative group suggested that the number of city councillors be reduced to below 40. Quite clearly this suggestion fell on the deaf ears of the commission.

It also was quite clear that neither the Labour group or the Liberal Democrat group supported the reduction, nor was there much support from the general public.

So Mr Robb I have no problem with the sentiment you express but you are targeting the wrong organisation.

Only too often we see the many commentators in and around our fair city making untrue and erroneous statements in this forum and the wider forum of social media.

This in my book is wrong and I try at least to be honest and factually correct. I will always apologise if I am wrong, unlike some commentators.
