EX-COUNCILLOR Tracey Simpson-Laing tells us all to “read between the lines” regarding the Community Stadium (Letters, February 3).

With the ousting of the previous administration the truth has been emerging for months as to how much of a mess their stadium project was.

Indeed the leaking of an investment prospectus a few months ago showed the financial bonanza the scheme represented to the third parties involved while costing York taxpayers a fortune, and the senior officer on the project team along with his deputy have left for pastures new.

The Labour cabinet allowed the project team far too much autonomy and project costs escalated out of all control, hiding behind “commercial confidentiality”.

My preferred option has always been the redevelopment of Bootham Crescent but if the new administration’s efforts with the assistance of private, local expertise manage to secure a financially viable scheme at Huntington, whereby the two clubs run the stadium directly to benefit themselves rather than handing a pot of taxpayers’ gold to a third party, then I would fully support it.
