YOU report on the threat to the Railway Institute in the preparation of a planning framework for the redevelopment of the York Central site (The Press, February 3).

You quote an appeal by Frank Paterson, president of the RI, for members to take part in the council’s current consultation on future plans for the site, and register their concern for the retention of the RI.

May I please endorse his appeal, especially as it was suggested to me at a workshop on the plans last week that the institute would be prepared to vacate their premises provided they were offered alternative accommodation in the city centre?

The Railway Institute and Queen Street bridge are both nominations on the draft Local List for York but this does not yet guarantee either protection in redevelopment of the site.

It is important therefore that the more people who demonstrate their support for retention of the Railway Institute, the better.
