JEREMY TAYLOR agrees (Letters, February 1) with other correspondents that York Central will only succeed if significant access for private cars is on offer.

Perhaps I can remind readers of one design principle which was agreed for the site by City of York Council executive last November to “ensure that as many trips as possible are taken by sustainable travel modes and to promote and facilitate modal shift from the car”.

The recent Hiscox development has 100 cycle parking spaces but nothing for cars. Employees and visitors are encouraged to travel there by bike or public transport.

Our City’s local transport plan seeks further reductions in car dependency. York Central offers a blank canvas to embody these development principles.

There may be scope to reserve a light rail corridor through the site, linking eventually with the A59 Park&Ride via the former British Sugar York North West site.
