THE City of York council tax support consultation has drawn to a close.
My own views are well known. I hope that the council provide claimants with a 100 per cent discount as the cumulative onslaught of social security cuts is well known.
But some quotes from the Advice York research outline the human impact: Laura: “I don’t even know if I’ll end up in prison but there is no way I can actually pay all of that money. It’s very distressing. I just got behind with everything really. I asked the man, will I go to jail if I don’t pay all these?”
Audrey: “I don’t use my heating and eat sandwiches so I don’t have to use gas.”
Jackie: “And I cringe, it sounds ridiculous, you look at your child and you think, ‘oh god don’t grow’. Because of trouser lengths.”
The heritage of our city says we look after each other.
