PARTY politics often has little relevance to the day-to-day business of local government and since my election to City of York Council I have almost always remained apolitical when involved in city council and ward matters.
It has usually seemed more appropriate to represent residents irrespective of party lines.
Having said that however, I am now about to be unashamedly party-political because in my view, there has never been a better time to stand up and be counted as a Conservative.
News about York’s Enterprise Zone status (The Press, November 26) means that it is essential for your elected Conservative councillors to continue to work together with central government to ensure we get the best deal for York.
Recent national and international issues illustrate more clearly than ever that the Labour party is in complete disarray and is likely to remain unable and unfit to lead the nation any time soon.
The Liberal Democrats are now a spent force in national politics, with little to offer in terms of leadership and with no meaningful presence in parliament.
There has never been a better time to support your local Conservative councillors and your local Conservative Member of Parliament in order to get the best deals for your city and for your country.
Cllr John Gates, Conservative councillor for Haxby & Wigginton, York
