BOTH Howard Perry and Roger Westmoreland (Letters, November 21) suggest there’s a parallel between the Troubles in Northern Ireland and IS. There is no comparison.

The conflict in Northern Ireland was political, not religious, which is why you could find Protestant members of the IRA and Catholics in the RUC and British Army.

Because it was political, compromise was possible.

There is no compromise with IS.

They want a world caliphate in which non-Muslims (or the wrong kind of Muslim) will be persecuted or exterminated.

Their grievance is that we exist and that our society does not enslave women, murder gays or kill people for thinking and speaking freely.

There is nothing to talk about, there is no middle ground.

We should not give an inch on any of our values to appease these savages.

Saying we should talk to IS is like suggesting you can negotiate with rabies.

The left used to fight for tolerance and personal freedom but it seems the red flag has been replaced by the white.
