THERE were dichotomies in consecutive comment columns in The Press last week.

On Friday, the good news that empty shop spaces are being filled with all the anticipated benefits to come.

On Saturday, castigations were made against delivery drivers for basically trying to do their job.

So on the one hand more shops opening, on the other more deliveries required.

Now given the finite space available in the city centre this will mean less space available for unloading, do you see where this is going?

Now to the “large vehicles blocking pavements, vans double parking and lorries stopping on double yellow lines”.

The city centre is completely covered in double yellow lines (Kings Square and Stonegate excluded) and unloading is permitted within certain parameters for vehicles within “permitted times”. It is of course irrelevant as to the type of vehicle used for delivery, the same rules apply.

It is obvious that the streets are too narrow to accommodate large trucks, consequently we have the daily scramble for space. This could be alleviated by putting a low weight limit on the city centre.

Then there is the time restriction of 10.30am reduced from the previous 11am limit, the consequence being more vehicles cramming into a shorter time slot.
