I THOUGHT that when Cllr Ian Gillies finished his stint as Lord Mayor and came back on the council to head the transport and strategy committee we would see some big improvements, as Cllr Gillies was an ex-policeman and an ex-taxi driver and would be aware of the problems motorists faced in York.

I was wrong. The first thing he did was to try to score points on the 20mph signs which Cllr Merrett introduced.

And yes Donald Campbell in Bluebird would have struggled to do 20mph in some of the streets where signs were put up, but that £600,000 has gone. There are a lot bigger traffic issues to sort out.

On the Tea Room Square fiasco, we told you what would happen, that it would be a complete gridlock situation and it is just getting worse.

There is no point wasting millions of pounds speeding up the trains to lose time saved trying to get out of York Station.

Student buses, numbers 66, 44, 4, 6, run around the city empty most of the time and are a big cause of congestion and the traffic light system is a joke.

I would like to invite the transport and strategy committee out of their ivory towers for an hour to see what is going on in York city centre.
