SINCE 1930 our fingers have done the walking, thanks to RR Donnelley of Flaxby, producers of Yellow Pages. Now the printer is set to close at the end of the year with a loss of about 200 jobs.

Unite the union call it devastating and with well-paid jobs under threat that won’t be easily replicated in rural North Yorkshire, they are absolutely right.

At this stage it's not clear what has precipitated the announcement, but it's almost certainly another sign of these rapidly changing times, where things thought indispensable just ten years ago have now become redundant.

Nowadays everyone uses their mobile to find a phone number. How sadly ironic for RR Donnelley.
