I WAS interested in your well-illustrated article about the treasures of the Yorkshire Museum (The Press, September 11).
However, I was surprised that the date and origin of the Escrick Ring remain as yet unknown.
From brief research I can suggest that it may originate from North Africa or Moorish Spain.
It bears a resemblance to the artefacts of Berber craftsmen, possibly from Marrakesh, around the 11th century.
At that time jewellery was apparently worn by ladies to ward off the “evil eye”.
Thank you again for all your fascinating and informative local history articles.
