REFERENCE to the siting of the Magic Roundabout and the proposals to move from St Sampson’s Square to the Eye of York (The Press, August 17).

It must be an affront to the scales of justice, especially outside the Law Court where many offenders face trial by jury.

For everyone concerned, past and present, including Judge Jeffries and Dick Turpin, this should be a sea of tranquility even today.

Let the jury decide.

READING the article and looking at the photographs in The Press (Failing drainage caused road flooding, August 29) the first thing I noticed was a problem common to most roads in York.

When roads are re-surfaced the manhole and drain covers are never lifted and re-aligned with the new surface. As a result leaves and rubbish get trapped in the lower covers and get compacted down by traffic.

Most rainwater drainage in older houses flows out into the streets. The rainwater flow from my house is now lower than the road surface and lets the water from the road flow back into it. The pipe constantly needs cleaning out to get any sort of flow!

We recently had a huge pool of water in the street following a thunderstorm. Watching out for passing cars with a long cane I twisted and prodded down the drain. Within a few seconds I had the satisfaction of hearing a gargling sound as the drain un-blocked itself.

Don’t people poke things with a stick any more?

WHEN walking my dogs with a friend on the cycle track in Naburn, thank goodness I was not on my own, as a stockily built man with a gun was on the cycle track.

A cyclist was talking to him, perhaps wondering like we were why he was there. I have seen him before as he is apparently allowed to shoot pigeons on the farmer’s land, but surely not on the cycle track? We did tell him we don’t think he should be on the actual track. He just said ‘report me then’. This track is very busy in the morning with cyclists, joggers and dog walkers, so why would he want to intimidate people like this?

We don’t have a problem if he is not on the cycle track. Does anyone know if this is legal?

I REFER to your comment piece (Post Office mess needs sorting out, The Press, August 29). At Haxby the excellent local PO and shop recently closed, and everything was instantly removed. The shop was never mentioned in the so-called consultation, promising wondrous improvements. The new PO counter is in the same street (so why move?) in the Martin McColl convenience store. PO Ltd have seemingly lost all interest; instead of promised improvements, we’ve lost lots of things – there is no co-ordination at all. Insufficient staff have been trained, and they still want a counter manager. (there is an ad in the window). Much needed photocopier, photobooth etc have vanished.

The shop and counter staff are friendly and helpful, but we’re all victims of anonymous managers far away.
