I WOULD very much like to thank the four very nice people who helped my wife after a very nasty fall on the pavement in Dodsworth Avenue, York, at 5.45pm on Tuesday.

Having telephoned me at home, I brought said wife back home, from where I rang 999 for an ambulance, which was on the spot in roughly five minutes.

I cannot praise the paramedics highly enough or the ongoing treatment received from the doctor, whose name was Sarah, and the rest of the staff.

Polite, smiling, nothing was any trouble. Hats off to the A&E staff. Not a place you want to visit, but four and a half hours of medical attention was superb.

Well done all of you. Many, many thanks.

RACHAEL Maskell’s letter (The Press, August 29) gave me another reason to justify why at the last General Election, for the first time in 55 years, I voted Conservative.

My reasons in May were that for five years we had been led by a leader who had as much charisma and drive as a wet tea towel.

With Rachael Maskell’s support for giving the vote to 16-year-olds I despair even further. Most 16-year-olds are either still at school, college or just starting work.

They have no experience of paying taxes, running a household and very little knowledge of the financial world so how can they be expected to vote properly on matters locally or nationally? Is this the only way that the Labour party hope to drum up more support.

In the forthcoming Labour leadership election it would seem that they will end up with a leader who has such radical views that they are liable to lose votes rather than gain them. I fear that this will be the end of the Labour party as we once knew it.

The only thing they may have going for them is that David Cameron would seem to be not much better.

A CLOSE family member and her daughter who live near Oxford travelled by air from the South to Scotland.

They only had hand luggage and in that luggage was a jar of homemade jam, a gift for her friend. It was confiscated.

They could have travelled all that distance in their car or by train or bus without this happening.

Have the Scots got a secret border control for the English or do they just like homemade jam?
