THE shutters are down at the only Post Office (PO) in Clifton Ward (The Press, August 29. Another reduction in a public service.

I am not surprised that the postmistress has snapped the shutters down. Wendy Martin appears to be a further victim of the Horizon accounting system, used by the PO nationally.

The level of complaints by sub-postmasters led the PO to commission an independent enquiry.

That enquiry by forensic accountants, Second Sight, concluded that the PO failed to look at the cause of shortfall and irregularities in some cases.

The PO started civil or criminal court proceedings against 100 sub-postmasters/mistresses.

Some pleaded guilty rather than face the vendetta that was mounted by a bureaucratic machine. The PO has repeatedly shrugged off all complaints.

The amount of money is so inconsequent compared to the £375 billion passed to our banks in years 2009 to 2012.

I hope the impasse can be resolved quickly for the public benefit and Mrs Martin.
