I WAS appalled at the news that the carousel has been told to move from St Sampson’s Square to the Eye of York at Christmas time (The Press, August 17).

It has always been in St Sampson’s Square for over 28 years.

This is very bad news for all York people who, like myself, have visited this lovely amusement.

I really feel that the owners of the carousel must be very upset. Who are these folks who have thought up such a mad idea?

It is all because of money.

This is not on. Let the traders for the St Nicholas Fayre go to the Eye of York.

I am York born and bred, a senior citizen of this wonderful place, but I have always taken my family and their children to the carousel at Christmas.

The Eye of York has no facilities.

At least in St Sampson’s Square there are toilets, shops, snack bars, and it makes the festive season feel so good to enjoy.

Hands off our city centre. Let York folks decide their choice.

CITY of York Council has announced tough new penalties for rogue landlords and agents (The Press, August 22), but there is no mention of possible action against rogue tenants.

By that I mean those who fail to pay the agreed rent, who steal the contents of the home, who cause criminal damage, who dismantle motor cycles on the living room carpet, who smoke indoors, who take drugs, who party through the night, who cause a nuisance to neighbours, who verbally abuse anyone who dares to complain, who threaten physical violence, who make false allegations of harassment against the landlord to thwart eviction proceedings; and last but by no means least, those who eventually abscond leaving behind a completely trashed dwelling, huge rent arrears and the gas and electricity cut off because of enormous unpaid bills.

In the interests of fairness and balance, could council officers please advise landlords who have suffered these experiences just what penalties are proposed against the perpetrators of this misery?

HOW clear Mr Hepworth’s letter and images in The Press (Letters, August 20) made the congestion caused by private cars in York’s old streets.

Is it fair that some, those who do not have to use a car, should take up so much space?

What the images could not show is how these cars pollute with exhaust fumes and with noise.

Compare the space, exhaust fumes and noise caused by a pedestrian or a cyclist with that of a car driver, sometimes the single occupant of their vehicle.

Even though public transport buses emit fumes and make noise they would be fuller if less people used their cars and thus more energy efficient.

Car drivers, please leave your cars outside the city centre, at home if possible.

PRINTED on my membership card is the following statement: “The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone.

“So as to create for all of us a community in which power wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few... and where we live freely in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.”

Perhaps in view of the vicious attack on Jeremy Corbyn and, incidentally on those of us who support his aims, they should be reminded of their commitment or else leave the party.

Like many lifelong Labour supporters, I resent the arrogance of people like Blair and his cronies suggesting that people who want socialism need a transplant or are morons.

Jeremy Corbyn is the only contestant who does not abuse nor try to undermine his rivals.

He is a man of principle who outlines policies rather than platitudes.

Who else has the courage to do that?
